Hello! My name is Mantas Jokstis, and I come from Lithuania. I study Chemistry through a three-year fast-track programme at HZ University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.
Before finishing Secondary School, I began thinking seriously about my future and the kind of higher education experience I wanted. I spent a great deal of time researching universities, reading articles, and comparing study opportunities both in my home country and abroad.
Eventually, I realised that I wanted more than a degree. I wanted to gain international experience, challenge myself, and discover how living in another country could help me grow as a person.
The Netherlands quickly became an attractive choice. It is an international and innovative country with strong connections to global business and industry. For me, this also meant thinking beyond graduation and considering the professional opportunities that could become available after completing my studies.
Another important factor was the Dutch higher education system. I was particularly interested in universities of applied sciences because of their practical approach. Instead of focusing almost entirely on theory, these institutions connect academic knowledge with laboratory work, projects, and professional experience.
That is exactly what I found at HZ University of Applied Sciences.
The university is not only focused on maintaining a strong reputation. Its lecturers and staff are constantly working to improve the study programmes and create an environment in which students can succeed.
The programme is designed around the student and combines theory with immediate practical application.
In Chemistry, theoretical lectures are followed by laboratory work. When conducting an experiment, you need to use the concepts you have learned, understand the process, and analyse the results. This makes the knowledge much easier to remember because you can see how it works in reality.
The study plan also includes English lessons related specifically to our academic and professional field. This was reassuring because international students do not need to arrive with perfect specialist vocabulary. The university helps us develop the language skills required for our studies and future careers.
HZ also organises excursions connected to different study programmes and professional opportunities. These visits allow students to learn more about industries, workplaces, and possible career directions outside the classroom.
Each group has a study or career coach who can help with academic challenges and other problems that may affect student life. My advice to future students is to speak openly with lecturers and coaches whenever something is difficult.
Asking for help is not a weakness. It is one of the best ways to make progress and benefit fully from the support available.
Student life in Vlissingen also offers much more than lectures and laboratory work.
Students can join sports activities through the university, while cultural organisations arrange trips to other Dutch cities and destinations across Europe. These activities provide a great opportunity to travel, relax, and meet people outside your study programme.
Many international students live together in student accommodation, which creates an active and welcoming community. The residents are generally open-minded and happy to meet newcomers, so there is always someone to talk to or spend time with.
Living with students from different parts of the world also changes your perspective. You learn about other cultures, hear different opinions, and begin to see both your studies and everyday life in new ways.
Finding a part-time job while studying is possible, although you need to take initiative. Opportunities do not always appear immediately, so it is important to search actively, speak to people, and remain persistent.
One of the best parts of Vlissingen is its sandy beach, which is only a short bicycle ride away. Students go there to study, play volleyball, relax, and meet friends.
It is difficult to imagine a better place to clear your mind after an intensive day of lectures or laboratory work.
Studying abroad is not always easy. You need to adapt to a different academic system, communicate in another language, and become responsible for your own everyday life.
But these challenges are also what make the experience so valuable.
At HZ, I found a balance between academic knowledge, practical Chemistry experience, career preparation, and an active international student life.
To anyone interested in new adventures and willing to face unfamiliar challenges, I would recommend considering this path. You will not only study your chosen subject. You will also meet people from around the world, expand your perspective, and discover opportunities that may influence your entire future.
Studying abroad gives you much more than a qualification. It gives you the chance to become more independent, open-minded, and prepared for an international career.
