Ideas are what make the world go round. Whether it is a bicycle or a jet engine, a fountain pen or a super-fast laptop computer, product design engineers are the innovators who visualise tomorrow today, and then work to make it happen. Design is a blend of art and science, so Engineering Product Designers blend brilliant creative thinking with scientific insight. The result is the creation of products that deal with everyday problems – from solving minor inconveniences like leaky teapots to tackling major issues such as launching lifeboats faster.

Course overview

Our design graduates blend creative thinking with scientific analysis and insight to make workable and functional product solutions.

Graduates will be able to identify consumer needs and design a product that meets aesthetic, functional and economic criteria. Academic modules cover the complete design cycle from conceptual design through to engineering science, product development, prototyping, presentation and design for manufacture.

The final year of the course revolves around the delivery of a major design project, you’ll be required to design, develop, prototype and manufacture a product to your own specifications. You’ll need to choose the appropriate manufacturing techniques and materials to make and test a working prototype of your product using our state-of-the-art  IT and workshop facilities. The result will be showcased at the University’s annual design show: www.lsbu.ac.uk/designshow

In the 40 years that this course has been running, students have frequently fulfilled these requirements so well that their products have earned them highly valued industry prizes.

The learning process here at LSBU is practical and applied, this means that you’ll graduate with a portfolio of key skills and experience including the production of design drawings, safe workshop practice, digital design skills (CAD and graphics) and the production of manufacturing prototypes.

Placement in industry

You are encouraged to spend your third year on placement in industry; this gives you the opportunity of testing and adapting the skills that you’ve learnt in class within a workplace environment. It also gives you an invaluable networking opportunity; many of our students have been employed by their placement companies on graduation.
